While ADS-B now brings subscription free weather to any iPad with the purchase of a small portable box, there are big benefits to having SiriusXM's SXAR1 – a portable satellite weather receiver that picks up SiriusXM weather data. In addition to the Metars, TAFs, winds aloft and composite radar images that ADS-B provides, the SXAR1 brings some extremely useful additional data, such as cloud tops, base reflectivity radar, NEXRAD storm cell attributes, surface wind analysis and more.

SiriusXM introduced SXAR1 last year and it displays its data through ForeFlight’s popular mobile app. The unit connects wirelessly through Bluetooth.

Flying will announce the winner of the first-ever Innovation Award next week in Oshkosh. With the HondaJet, the CubCrafters XCub, the Piper M600, and the Dynon D10A and Garmin G5 flight displays, the SiriusXM SXAR1 has strong competition for the top prize.
