A recent expedition to the remote Pacific atoll of Nikumaroro found no evidence of legendary aviator Amelia Earhart’s lost aircraft, determining that a satellite anomaly known as the “Taraia Object” is likely a collection of tree roots covered in coral sand, Purdue University announced.
The expedition is a joint effort of the Archaeological Legacy Institute (ALI), Purdue Research Foundation, and Purdue University. Earhart was a lecturer at Purdue in the 1930s before launching on her epic around-the-world flight attempt, and her legacy remains tied to the institution.
