Cracks, Adjustments

A 1.5-inch long crack was discovered in the forward firewall doubler (p/n 0753600-24). The crack was located on the lower left quadrant of the doubler, and was centered around the top rivet attaching the parking brake control bracket to the firewall and firewall doubler. When the parking brake handle is pulled, this area of the firewall and doubler flex. Key Takeaways:

  • Several aircraft experienced structural fatigue and component wear issues, including a cracked firewall doubler on a Cessna 182T from parking brake usage and a deteriorated vacuum hose leading to pump failure on a Mooney M20R.
  • Engine-related malfunctions included a Cessna 402C engine quitting due to a misadjusted fuel injection system, and a Continental O-470R experiencing a catastrophic cracked case failure in cruise flight, potentially linked to age and auto fuel use.
  • A critical safety device, the Artex ME-406 ELT, repeatedly failed to reset after testing, requiring manual battery disconnection, even after being returned from the manufacturer.
