Burned And Separated
The nose landing gear failed to extend when the gear was lowered for landing-a nose-gear "up" landing followed. Examination revealed the uplock bellcrank forward arm (p/n: 204303112) was bent and cracked through 90 percent of its material. It would not allow the uplock to disengage. The probable cause: severe side loading during landing at an unknown time. A new part was installed and a gear-rigging check made. No other problems were noted.
Key Takeaways:
- A Cessna 177RG experienced a nose landing gear failure during landing due to a bent and cracked uplock bellcrank, attributed to severe side loading.
- Maintenance inspections revealed a cracked exhaust heat exchanger on a Diamond DA40, two cracked mounting nuts on an MT MTV-12-B propeller, and an overheated Slick magneto on a Cirrus SR20.
- A newly overhauled Teledyne Continental O-200A engine failed on its first test flight due to galled and sticking intake valves in recently installed cylinders.
