Briefing: February 2010

We now have approved technical and operational standards for ADS-B equipment-but dont get too excited. This really means (among other things) that manufacturers can now move forward to develop conforming ADS-B hardware. The FAAs final rule on what will be required for GA equipage to fly in controlled airspace isnt due until April of this year. Compliance isnt required for another decade-provided the system is up and running by then.

Key Takeaways:

  • Approved technical standards for ADS-B equipment are now in place, allowing manufacturing to proceed, though the general aviation equipage mandate and compliance timeline remain undefined.
  • Significant progress is being made in alternative, lead-free aviation fuels, with Swift's 100SF approved as a test fuel and GAMI's G100UL formulation nearing patent and feasibility assessment.
  • Lockheed Martin is closing seven Flight Service Stations and laying off staff, citing reduced call volume and operational efficiencies, while asserting no diminished service.
  • The FAA has banned "through-the-fence" airport access agreements, prohibiting renewals and potentially forcing the cancellation of existing agreements at FAA-funded airports, impacting adjacent property owners and businesses.
