Briefing: February 2010

We now have approved technical and operational standards for ADS-B equipment-but dont get too excited. This really means (among other things) that manufacturers can now move forward to develop conforming ADS-B hardware. The FAAs final rule on what will be required for GA equipage to fly in controlled airspace isnt due until April of this year. Compliance isnt required for another decade-provided the system is up and running by then.

Key Takeaways:

  • Approved technical and operational standards for ADS-B equipment have been defined, enabling manufacturing, but the FAA's general aviation equipage mandate and compliance timeline are still pending.
  • Two new lead-free alternative aviation fuels, Swift's 100SF and GAMI's G100UL, are making significant progress towards certification.
  • The FAA has banned "through-the-fence" airport access agreements, potentially impacting adjacent property owners and businesses reliant on direct airport access.
  • Lockheed Martin is closing seven Flight Service Stations due to reduced call volume, and all paper pilot certificates must be replaced with new plastic versions by March 31.
