NextGen is such a simple word, yet it implies so much. This FAA effort to redesign the entire National Airspace Systems underlying technology and procedures has been underway for years and will continue for many more. Billions of dollars and millions of hours have been dedicated to new systems, new airspace design and new user training.
NextGen is the FAA's extensive, multi-year modernization of the National Airspace System, aiming for increased safety, efficiency, and reduced delays through initiatives like the ADS-B mandate, VOR reduction, and the System-Wide Information Management (SWIM) system.
Visible progress is evident in ADS-B implementation, providing real-time traffic and weather data, and in SWIM, which streamlines aviation data access for all users, offering significant operational advantages.
However, the crucial En Route Automation Management (ERAM) system is significantly delayed, over budget, and experiencing stability issues during its rollout, posing a major challenge to NextGen's full potential, though overall progress is considered real and encouraging.
