Ipad for IFR update

I get the question a lot: Whats the best iPad app for aviation? Its impossible to answer. Not only is there no perfect app for all users, the field changes so quickly advice is only good until the competition releases its next update. In fact, I cant even answer whats the best app for only chart use under IFR.

Key Takeaways:

  • The aviation iPad app market is highly dynamic and competitive, with no single "best" option, as leading apps like ForeFlight and WingX continuously evolve and add features.
  • Major updates include ForeFlight's integration of XM weather, PIREPS, and Canadian charts, and WingX's addition of synthetic vision (often requiring additional hardware).
  • Other apps, such as Flight Guide, Pilot MyCast, FltPlan.com, and FreeFlight, offer diverse functionalities ranging from specialized airport information and expanded flight planning to free chart access.
  • The FAA's proposed implementation of significant fees for digital charts is expected to increase the future cost of aviation app subscriptions for users.
