When requested to call ATC for a pilot deviation, make the call but first take time to review the facts, applicable regulations, and charts, and discuss the situation with others if needed.
During the call, maintain a humble, respectful, and conciliatory attitude, even if you believe ATC made an error. Be concise, admit fault if appropriate, and assure the controller that you understand the mistake and it won't be repeated, avoiding speculation or spinning facts.
If the issue isn't resolved by the call, promptly submit a NASA ASRS report. For serious deviations or official notices of violation, seek advice from an attorney specializing in aviation law.
