At the AOPA Summit in October 2012 Lockheed Martin had a large and impressive display to announce the rollout of Flight Services (LMFS). Sigh…another flight planning app. Why bother? We took a look and concluded that the site has a lot to offer, but a lot to improve.
One Stop Web Weather?
Key Takeaways:
- Lockheed Martin Flight Services (LMFS) provides pilots with a comprehensive web-based tool offering nearly all data used by telephone briefers for flight planning and weather.
- Key features include an Adverse Condition Alerting Service (ACAS) for pre-flight hazard notifications and detailed assistance for filing ICAO flight plans.
- The service also offers customizable quick briefings, a detailed airport directory, and future plans for enhanced search and rescue (SAR) and interactive online briefings with FSS personnel.
- While promising, LMFS is still under development, currently lacking auto-summarized weather data and plain-language decoders, but aims to improve based on pilot feedback.
