Aviation diesel engines offer significant economic advantages, including better fuel consumption and the ability to run on jet-A, which is increasingly appealing given the rising cost and uncertain future of 100LL avgas.
Despite technological advancements and growing interest, widespread adoption in the U.S. is currently limited by factors such as higher initial costs, engine weight, altitude restrictions, the existing large fleet of gasoline engines, and past market setbacks.
The market is evolving with increased competition, new higher-horsepower engines, and simplified operations like single-lever power control (FADEC), positioning modern diesels as a strong, viable, and potentially "smart" choice for the future of general aviation.
What pilots in Europe, Africa, South America and Asia already know about aviation diesels — or, to use the more technically precise term, compression-ignition engines — we’re slowly learning for ourselves here in America. And the more we learn, the more we’re starting to think we could get used to the smell of jet fuel powering our piston airplanes.
