When ATC Fails

Gemini Sparkle

Key Takeaways:

  • While Air Traffic Control (ATC) is generally highly reliable, it is not infallible, and errors can occur due to factors like human mistakes, communication gaps, training issues, or system saturation.
  • Pilots must actively and critically listen to all ATC instructions, understanding both explicit and implied meanings, and noting any missing information.
  • It is the pilot's explicit responsibility to question and seek clarification on any ATC clearance that is confusing, unclear, or perceived to be unsafe, as failing to do so is considered a pilot error.

Everything seemed routine. My clearance included direct to the destination at a safe altitude for the high terrain along the route. Taxi and runup went smoothly. But before I switched to the tower frequency, ground called to say, “I have an amendment to your altitude.” Turns out the new altitude was too low for the terrain along the direct route in the clearance.

“Um, sorry, we can’t accept that altitude on that route.”
