Key Takeaways:

  • The author initially sought to find an F4U Corsair flown by his WWII naval aviator grandfather but instead experienced a "Pilot Maker" T-6 (SNJ) flight, mirroring his grandfather's advanced training.
  • During the challenging T-6 flight, he gained a visceral understanding of the intense training WWII pilots underwent, experiencing maneuvers crucial for preparing them for combat aircraft.
  • An unexpected discovery revealed the specific T-6 he flew was accepted by the Navy at Pensacola just weeks after his grandfather's training there, providing an incredibly close, almost direct connection to his family's aviation history.

One snowy weekend morning in January, I was casually browsing my grandfather’s World War II logbook, accompanied by a tall mug of coffee.

Watching recently posted YouTube videos of F4U Corsairs being restored planted the seed of an idea. My basic plan was to search the internet for all known Corsair airframes either being flown or displayed in aviation museums. I collected their identification numbers and set about comparing those with the F4U Corsairs my grandfather had flown in WWII.
