Key Takeaways:

  • Student pilots must develop robust weather interpretation skills by learning to interpolate data from various sources like METARs, TAFs, and surrounding airport reports, especially at fields without automated weather systems.
  • It is crucial for pilots to understand the distinction between current (METAR) and forecast (TAF) weather, exercising skepticism about predictions, prioritizing safe decision-making over mere legality, and always planning for contingency "escape routes."
  • Flight instructors are responsible for teaching comprehensive weather briefings early in training, fostering pattern recognition, multi-source interpretation, and the critical judgment needed to know when to cancel a flight for safety.

The learner said he was supposed to do his first solo flight that day. He had the airplane reserved from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. He was supposed to be at the flight school by 8:30 a.m. but was a little late because it was a foggy morning.

The local weather broadcasters and traffic reporters were warning about low visibility on the roads, and they were right—driving to work made me want to file IFR before I left my home.
