Key Takeaways:

  • The article clarifies that a high-altitude endorsement is required to *act* as Pilot In Command (PIC) above FL250, but not to *log* PIC time when solely manipulating the controls.
  • A useful ForeFlight feature is highlighted, allowing quick entry of radial/distance waypoints (e.g., "IRW/265/39") directly into the route or search box.
  • Pilots can now track the status of their FAA medical certificate applications in real-time through a new feature on MedXpress.
  • The importance of thorough flight planning is emphasized, including reviewing aircraft performance for specific conditions and comparing all available procedures at a destination for efficiency and safety.

I’ve been a subscriber to your excellent magazine for about 20 years now, and I always enjoy the care with which you treat regulations, which is why I was surprised to read the text at the top of Bill Dolson’s story “High Altitude Training” in the Jan 2022 issue. The text reads: “To log PIC time in an aircraft that can fly above FL250 you need a high-altitude endorsement.”
