Check Ride Prep: Going From Rote to Ready

What instructors and pilot applicants need to know to make the most of this valuable step

Key Takeaways:

  • Mock check rides are crucial for evaluating pilot readiness, requiring CFIs to clearly define their role (e.g., observer, evaluator) and conduct a structured assessment aligned with Airman Certification Standards (ACS).
  • Effective preparation for a check ride extends beyond rote memorization, demanding deep understanding of aircraft systems, regulations, POH details, and practical application like accurate cross-country planning and logbook verification.
  • These evaluations, including stage checks, serve as essential opportunities for both applicants and instructors to identify and address deficiencies, ensuring the pilot is truly ready for the check ride and capable of safe, independent flight.

To my fellow CFIs: If you are asked to administer a mock check ride to a pilot applicant, make sure you know what is expected of you. The answer may vary.

Sometimes you may be asked to strictly be in the role of observer, noting what the learner knows, what they don’t know, and what they can and cannot do. Your job may be to identify the soft spots and then help the learner perfect a maneuver or nugget of knowledge. Or, worst-case scenario, you may be playing the heavy, telling the applicant who has been trying to bully their CFI into signing them off that, no, they are not ready, as their performance is not quite to check ride standards.
