This weekend (July 24-26), more than 30 Douglas DC-3s/C-47s are expected for a reunion known as The Last Time. (True fans of the iconic transport have expressed doubts regarding the name of the event.) To be held at Whiteside County Airport, Rock Falls, Illinois, the gathering marks the 75th anniversary of the first flight of the DC-3. Though there will be no mass arrival at EAA AirVenture as originally planned, many of the participants in The Last Time event are expected to fly up to Oshkosh anyway and place their aircraft on display. Several special events and displays will be on tap during AirVenture to mark the anniversary of the aircraft that Gen. Dwight Eisenhower credited with helping win World War II. Among the DC-3s in attendance will be at least one of the 12 that currently fly in regularly scheduled service with Buffalo Airways, Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. The family-owned and operated airline is the last to fly DC-3s in regularly scheduled passenger service, and will be featured in the August issue of EAA’s Sport Aviation magazine.
