Key Takeaways:

  • The FAA has implemented new registration rules for small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) weighing between 0.55 lbs and 55 lbs, requiring operators aged 13 or older to register online for a $5 fee and affix the registration to their drone.
  • Drone pilots must follow several common sense guidelines, including keeping the drone within line of sight, below 400 feet, clear of people and other aircraft, respecting privacy, and contacting control towers when flying near airports.
  • Unsafe drone operation carries serious legal repercussions and has already led to incidents like the suspension of firefighting missions and near misses with commercial aircraft.

The drone industry is booming and small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) may become one of the most popular Christmas presents this year. Yesterday the FAA’s new drone registration rules kicked in, requiring all people flying an sUAS between 0.55 lbs and 55 lbs to register their aircraft. If you are flying a heavier drone or are using it for anything but hobby and recreation you will have to go through a more arduous registration process.
