The D-Day Squadron organized the 2024 Legacy Tour, bringing historic C-47 Skytrain aircraft back to France for the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
Participants, including descendants of D-Day veterans, experienced a deeply personal and emotional connection to the historical event by flying in the original aircraft over the Normandy beaches.
The tour meticulously recreated aspects of the 1944 operation, including transatlantic crossings, flying over D-Day landmarks, and performing commemorative paratrooper jumps from the veteran C-47s.
A central motivation of the Legacy Tour is to preserve the history of D-Day and the C-47 aircraft, passing their stories and significance to future generations.
At 00:52 on June 6, 1944, the first phase of Operation Overlord began.
On the ground, occupied France awaited the Allied airborne pathfinders preparing to jump. The transport aircraft, down low and vulnerable, were tasked with flying in unescorted and returning to England to repeat the mission. This operation was critical, years in the making, and it could not fail.
