Weather Minimums Memo at Florida Flight School Generates Controversy

A new policy at L3Harris Flight Academy in Orlando dictates that the weather must be below certain criteria before a flight can be canceled or penalties would be levied.

Key Takeaways:

  • L3Harris Flight Academy's new weather cancellation policy penalizes students for not flying if conditions meet specific, often marginal, minimums, which are widely criticized by aviation experts.
  • The policy is seen as pressuring student pilots and instructors to fly in unsafe or challenging weather, hindering the development of crucial aeronautical decision-making and personal risk management skills.
  • While technically compliant with FAA regulations, the specified minimums for VFR cross-country flights (e.g., 3 sm visibility, 2,000 ft ceiling) are considered by many to be below safe personal minimums for student training.
  • Critics argue the policy prioritizes revenue and training efficiency over fostering sound pilot judgment, potentially encouraging unsafe practices and increasing accident risk.

“If I wasn’t here right now, would you fly?”

I ask my private pilot candidates this when the weather is unstable or marginal VFR and falling. If they determine the weather does not support the mission, they need to explain why they came to that decision.
