Key Takeaways:

  • A unique, one-of-a-kind replica of the formidable WWI Fokker D.VII biplane, meticulously built by non-pilot Buck Toenges over many years with global expert assistance, debuted at EAA AirVenture.
  • The replica combines "modern materials" with "vintage techniques," featuring a substitute engine due to original component scarcity, and sports a distinctive, colorful paint scheme with personal tributes.
  • Flown to AirVenture by pilot Dewey Davenport after required airworthiness testing, the aircraft is described as flying "like an antique airplane" with challenging handling that demands constant attention.

There is something special about bringing an aircraft to EAA AirVenture for the first time—especially when that aircraft is a one-of-a-kind replica of the Fokker D.VII.

The Fokker D.VII is a German biplane designed in 1918 by Reinhold Platz of the Fokker-Flugzeugwerke. During World War I, it was one of the most formidable German aircraft in the sky and a favorite of Germany’s Aces.
