Today’s Top Pick is a 1967 Piper PA-32-260 Cherokee Six.

Piper’s original PA-28 Cherokee, introduced in 1960, was a successful answer to Cessna’s 172 Skyhawk, and the two competed for decades in the markets for trainers and economical personal aircraft. By the early 1960s, though, Cessna was offering the larger, six-place 205, and later the 206, to customers seeking utility aircraft with more space and higher useful loads.

In response, Piper enlarged its popular Cherokee, lengthening and widening the cabin and adding a couple of feet to the wing. The new model also got more muscle from a 260 hp Lycoming O-540 and later from a 300 hp IO-540. For some pilots, the new Cherokee Six became the airborne version of the family station wagon. For others it performed the heavy-hauling duties of a pickup truck or van.

While the PA-32 airframe continued to evolve, first adopting retractable gear to become the Lance, and later the Saratoga, with a new wing and more luxurious interior, the basic, fixed-gear Six soldiered on for decades. For many missions, the less-complicated, utilitarian model is the most practical and economical mount.
