The Art of the Pilot Debrief

Don't rush the most important part of the flight.

Key Takeaways:

  • Effective post-flight debriefing is crucial for pilot training, providing learners with clear feedback on performance, adherence to standards, areas for improvement, and future objectives.
  • Technology, such as flight recording apps (e.g., ForeFlight) and cockpit cameras, can significantly enhance debriefs by providing objective data, but this must be complemented by precise verbal guidance and discussion of real-world application.
  • Flight instructors are responsible for delivering specific, actionable feedback that identifies the "why" behind errors, offers solutions, provides sincere praise, and allocates sufficient time for comprehensive discussions and future lesson planning.
  • Pilots should also engage in self-debriefing after each flight, critically assessing their own performance to continuously identify and address areas needing improvement.

The flight instructor was known for being quiet in the aircraft. He’d show the learners what to do, then sit back and watch. His debriefs consisted of signing the logbook and saying, “You did pretty good. See you next week.”

The students began searching for other instructors—the reason? They were unsure if they were “doing this right” and “making progress” because the instructor did not supply this information. There was no postflight debrief.
