A 1950s-era vintage Spanish jet trainer crashed into a hangar and exploded in a fireball at an airshow in Spain on Sunday, killing its 35-year-old pilot.

Around 3,000 spectators witnessed the crash at Cuatro Vientos Airport when the historic Hispano HA-200 Saeta went out of control and crashed, sending a fireball and thick black smoke into the air.

Ladislao Tejedor Romero, 35, an experienced pilot of the Saeta advanced jet trainer, was pronounced dead at a hospital. He was the assistant to Spanish Defense Minister Pedro Morenes.

Investigators said the cause of the crash is not known. Video footage posted on YouTube shows the jet falling from the sky followed by a large plume of smoke rising above a row of hangars. Spain’s airport authority said no one on the ground was injured.
