January 9, 2010, Bayport, N.Y., Stinson 108

The airplane experienced a total loss of engine power at 1255 Eastern time while in cruise flight. The private pilot and passenger were not injured, but the airplane was substantially damaged during the subsequent forced landing. Visual conditions prevailed.The pilot later stated the engine began to run rough. He applied carburetor heat and the engine cleared up. He disengaged the carburetor heat but the engine again began to run rough and lost power. The pilot subsequently made a forced landing on a shoreline and nosed over inverted. Debris were discovered in the main fuel gascolator and the carburetor.

April 08, 2005, Oak Harbor, Wash. / Stinson 10-A

The airplane collided with trees and terrain at about 1600 Pacific time and was substantially damaged by impact and a post-crash fire. The Private pilot and his passenger were fatally injured. The aircraft departed from the pilots private airstrip at an unknown time. The airstrip was located within one-quarter of a mile northwest of the accident site. Witnesses near the accident site reported that the aircraft was seen traveling in an easterly direction, very low and near the tree line just before the collision. The witnesses reported that the engine was running, but seemed like it was strained or not at full power….

July 31, White Post, Va. / Stinson 108

At about 1600 eastern time, a Stinson 108 was damaged while landing at White Post Airport. The pilot was not injured. The pilot said he had just completed an annual inspection of the airplane and had also overhauled the engine. After a normal takeoff, he returned for landing. As he added the final notch of flaps, he said he heard a ping and the airplane dove toward the ground. He was unable to arrest the descent and the airplane hit hard and nosed over. An FAA inspector found that when the control yoke was moved through its full range of motion, it struck the radio rack, which restricted its rearward motion….

March 07, Eloy, Ariz. / Stinson 108-1

At about 0710 mountain time, a Stinson 108-1 lost engine power and nosed over in a field near Eloy during the ensuing forced landing. The pilot suffered only minor injuries. The pilot told investigators she was flying at 4,500 feet when she heard a bang, followed by a total loss of power. The engine was examined and the number 3 and 4 cylinders were badly damaged. The number 4 cylinder exhaust valve had fractured at the stem and was missing….

July 05, Friendly, Md. / Stinson 108-3

At about 11:00 eastern time, a Stinson 108-3 lost engine power after takeoff from Potomac Airfield and made a forced landing into trees. The pilot sustained minor injuries and the passenger was seriously injured. The pilot said he had just purchased fuel and was returning to his home airport about two miles to the east. The engine ran rough immediately on startup, but then smoothed out. He departed runway 24 but the engine lost all power on initial climb. The pilot believed he had a magneto problem….

April 26, White Post, Va. / Stinson 108

At 06:00 eastern time, a Stinson 108 was damaged following a loss of control during takeoff from White Post Airport. The pilot was seriously injured. Investigators said the grass on the private strip was about nine inches tall and wet, and the aircraft was covered with frost. The pilot said he pulled the aircraft from the hangar the night before because he had a meeting to attend the next morning and knew hed be in a hurry….
