The commercial pilot was in the airplanes right seat and was performing touch and go landings. The airplane began skidding on the snow and weathervaning into the wind during the landing roll, and then went off the runway and into the snow. Substantial damage occurred to ribs in the airplanes right wing. The pilot reported there were no mechanical malfunctions with the airplane during the accident flight.

At about 1917 Eastern time, the airplane was substantially damaged following an in-flight collision with trees and terrain. The solo private pilot sustained serious injuries. Night instrument conditions were present. The pilot was performing the return leg of a night cross-country for a commercial pilot certificate.

January 9, 2011, Westcliffe, Colo., Piper PA-46-350P

At approximately 1340 Mountain time, the airplane was substantially damaged upon impact with mountainous terrain. The private pilot and passenger were both fatally injured. An IFR flight plan had been filed. The airplane disappeared from radar while en route to its destination; search teams discovered it the following day.

December 4, 2010, Pullman, Wash., Piper PA-18-150 Super Cub

The pilot was chasing coyotes at low level over open snow-covered terrain when he noticed the airplanes engine was beginning to lose power and run rough. He applied carburetor heat and full power, but just as the engine started to regain power, the airplanes main wheels broke through the crusty snow layer.

The pilot decided to make a practice landing on a gravel bar near the middle of a river. While on short final, the airplane encountered a downdraft and its main landing gear tires touched the surface of the water, flipping over onto its back and coming to rest on the gravel bar.

November 10, 2010 in Tucson, AZ, Piper PA-30

At about 1657 Mountain time, the airplane collided with a building during taxi after landing. The airline transport pilot/flight instructor was not injured but the airplane sustained substantial damage. Visual conditions prevailed. Earlier, the pilot flew to Phoenix to complete a flight check for his CFI renewal. He reported brake trouble, and had a mechanic inspect the brakes, but no anomalies were found. The pilot was experiencing headaches during the oral examination and terminated the check ride.

November 11, 2010, West Palm Beach, Fla., Piper PA-44-180

The airplane collided nose-down onto a taxiway at 1805 Eastern time, shortly after takeoff. The flight instructor, a commercial pilot and two passengers were killed, and the airplane was destroyed. There was a post-crash fire. During initial climb, the flight instructor told ATC they had an engine failure and “needed to turn-around and land.” The controller cleared the flight to land “any runway” and there was no further communications with the flight.

November 21, 2010, Norfolk, Neb., Piper PA-24-260

The airplane was destroyed at an undetermined time following impact with terrain. The pilot and passenger sustained fatal injuries. The airplane impacted a tree adjacent to rolling pasture. The initial impact point with terrain, contained several ground cuts and appeared consistent with prop strikes. Several ground impact scars and miscellaneous pieces of the aircraft were found along the wreckage path to the airplane wreckage.
