September 7, 2008, Atlanta, Ga., Piper J5A Cruiser

The airplane incurred substantial damage at 1600 Eastern time when it impacted terrain during a banner-tow operation. The commercial pilot was not injured. Visual conditions prevailed. The pilot took off and executed the banner pick-up maneuver but missed. During the second attempt the pilot “heard and felt a pop from the elevator cable.” The airplane leveled off and he reduced engine power. With the flight control stick fully aft, he observed the elevator was in the neutral position.

October 04, Jackson, Tenn. / Piper Cub

At 1335 central time, an exhibition Piper J-3 Cub was substantially damaged when it fell from a 1961 Pontiac Catalina. The pilot, who was not injured in the accident, had attempted to take off from the specially configured automobile during an air show at the McKellar Sipes Regional Airport. The airplane landed as planned on top of the car, but when the pilot attempted to take off, the tail wheel caught on a support beam atop the car. The airplane then rolled off and crashed on the runway….

Apr. 17, Jakcson, Miss. / Piper J-3C

At about 10:45 CDT, a Piper J-3C operating as an airshow flight lost a performer, who fell from an externally fixed rope ladder at Hawkins Airport. The performer was killed. The performer was stationed on a truck platform, and had made the truck-to-ladder transfer. The airplane began to climb and was 60 to 120 feet agl when the performer lost his grip on the rope ladder. The routine had been given FAA airshow approval….

July 07, Andover, N.J. / Piper Cub

At about 1100 eastern time, a Piper J3-C65 crashed during a training exercise near Trinca Airport. The flight instructor was seriously injured and the pilot-rated student suffered minor injuries. The pilot was undergoing tailwheel training and was on initial climb after a touch-and-go when the instructor pulled power to simulate an engine failure. The instructor urged the pilot to lower the nose, but the pilot continued to slow the airplane until it stalled and spun into a cornfield….

April 15, Lanconia, N.H. / Piper Cub

At about 14:00 EDT, a Piper J3C-65 crashed while maneuvering near Lanconia, leaving the two occupants seriously injured. The pilot reportedly took off from his fathers grass field and entered a right turn, 150 feet above the ground. After completing the turn the airplane pitched up, stalled and descended to the ground almost vertically. An investigator said a sample of fuel that was drained from the airplane after the accident was green and cloudy. Fuel examined in the gascolator resembled muddy water. The airplane had last been fueled in October 1999 and had not been flown since….

April 14, Carrollton, Ga. / Piper Cub

At 1915 eastern time, a Piper J-3 crashed while making a precautionary landing immediately after takeoff. The pilot was not injured. The pilot said he noticed smoke in the cockpit during the takeoff and elected to return to the airport. He then a hard left bank and reduced power, and the airplane stalled and crashed….
