At about 2100 eastern time, a Piper PA-28 made a forced landing while losing power on approach to Hinde Airport. The flight instructor and student pilot were not injured. The flight instructor said he told the student pilot to increase power while on short final, but the engine did not respond when the student pilot advanced the throttle. The airplane landed a half-mile short. The flight instructor secured the systems and noted the mag switch was already in the off position. Aug. 2, Taberg, N.Y. / Piper Cherokee

At about 13:00 eastern time, a Piper PA-28-180 was substantially damaged while departing a private grass strip. The pilot sustained minor injuries and three passengers were not injured. The pilot reported that, while en route to Albany, the airplanes upper door latch opened and the pilot intended to perform a precautionary landing at Becks Grove Airport in Rome to secure the door. The pilot was receiving VFR flight following from Griffiss ATC and was asked if he had Becks Grove in sight. The pilot asked the controller if the airport was a grass strip and the controller replied in the affirmative. Nov. 4, Livermore, Calif. / Piper Cherokee

At 12:01 Pacific time, a Piper PA-28-140 was damaged while landing in a field after losing engine power five miles east of Livermore Municipal Airport. The CFI was seriously injured and the pilot-rated student was not injured. The student said he was shooting approaches into Livermore and, while on the ILS Runway 25R approach, he intended to switch from the right tank to the left tank, but moved the fuel selector handle to the off position. When he and the CFI attempted to move the fuel selector handle back to the left tank, it jammed….

July 21, Mattituck, N.Y. / Piper Cherokee

At about 14:15 eastern time, a Piper PA-28 overran the runway at Mattituck Airbase and crashed into trees. The four aboard were not injured. The pilot was following a Mooney in the traffic pattern and landed about halfway down runway 01 at a high rate of speed. Winds at an airport 10 miles to the southwest were from 200 degrees at 9 knots….
