At 12:18 CDT, Piper PA-28R-200 crashed shortly after takeoff from Carr Memorial Air Field, but the pilot was not injured. The pilot said he took off from runway 36 and was climbing through 500 feet when the engine began running roughly. He initiated a 180-degree turn and the engine problem grew worse. At the completion of the turn the engine stopped. The airplane came to rest in a wooded area -mile north northwest of the airport….

Aug. 8, Seven Springs, Pa. / Piper PA28R-180 Arrow

At about 15:10 EDT, a Piper Arrow struck trees shortly after takeoff from the Seven Springs Airport, killing the pilot and passenger. The IFR flight was originating, destined for Louisville, Ky. The aircraft struck trees about mile from the runway, but all were below runway elevation because of downsloping terrain. A check of FAA records showed that the pilots certificate had been suspended for one year on March 10, 1999, for violation of FAR Part 61.15A, which covers drug convictions….

Feb. 16, Mount Holly, N.J. / Piper Arrow

At about 10:00 EST, a Piper PA-28R-200 made a forced landing in a field shortly after takeoff from South Jersey Regional Airport. The pilot was unhurt. The pilot was planning to practice maneuvers for his upcoming commercial checkride when he was told the airplane was down for maintenance. He waited, and was then asked if he objected to making the first test flight of the rental airplane. He said the run-up was normal and he departed runway 26. At 50 feet, the engine began to backfire and lose power. At 350 feet the engine lost all power. A mechanic at the flight school that operated the airplane said the maintenance performed on the day of the accident consisted of reconnecting a manifold…

June 11, Gettysburg, Pa. / Piper Arrow

At about 1645 eastern time, a Piper PA-28-200 crashed on takeoff from a private grass airstrip near Gettysburg. The pilot and passenger received minor injuries. The pilot said he landed at the 1,800-foot long grass airstrip and then discovered it was not his intended destination. He positioned the airplane to take off diagonally to take advantage of wind conditions, but the airplane stuck trees and a powerline at the end of the runway….

Aug. 10, Avalon, Calif. / Piper Arrow

At 12:30 Pacific time, a Piper PA-28R-200 landed short of the approach end of runway 22 at the Catalina Island Airport, shearing off the right main gear and damaging the right wing. The three occupants were not injured. Steeply downsloping terrain surrounds the airport on three sides and the terrain at the approach end of runway 22 is very precipitous down to the ocean below. The pilot said the airplane was caught in a downdraft as he came over the cliff edge for landing. The airplane landed hard approximately 20 feet short of the approach end of the runway….

Nov. 5, Teec Nos Pos, Ariz. / Piper Arrow

At about 14:55 mountain time, a Piper PA-28-200 suffered an in-flight structural failure near Teec Nos Pos and crashed, killing the pilot and passenger. The airplane was operated by a flying club in Broomfield, Colo., and had departed on Nov. 3. A notepad found in the wreckage documented a flight from Jeffco Airport in Broomfield to Monarch Pass, Blue Mesa, Dove Creek, Page and Las Vegas. The wreckage was found at 8,600 feet in the Carrizo Mountains after an ELT beacon alerted the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center….

Jan. 14, Greenville, N.C. / Piper Arrow

At about 18:28 eastern time, a Piper PA-28R-180 struck wires and crashed while making an ILS approach to Pitt/Greenville Airport. The pilot and passenger were killed. The flight departed Tifton, Ga., en route to Greenville, VFR and without a flight plan. The pilot requested an IFR clearance about 30 miles southwest of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and was cleared to descend from 5,500 feet to 3,000 feet. ATC observed the aircraft descend below its assigned altitude twice. The flight was cleared for the approach. The minimum descent altitude was 1,600. The airplane struck power lines about 35 feet agl (65 feet msl) about 11 miles from the airport….

May 31, Albuquerque, N.M. / Piper Arrow

At 20:34 mountain time, a Piper PA-28R-180 was destroyed during a forced landing two miles south of Albuquerque International Sunport. The pilot suffered minor injuries. The airplane took off from runway 21 and, as it climbed to 150 to 200 feet, the engine lurched and began sputtering. The pilot reported his situation to the control tower and he was cleared to land on any runway. As he turned around, the right wing struck a power line and was torn off, and the airplane crashed on a mesa. Inspection revealed the No. 1 cylinder head had blown off at the barrel….

At about 08:25 eastern time, a Piper PA-28R struck a fence during taxi at Orlando International Airport. The commercial-rated pilot was not injured. The pilot was taxiing to park in preparation to meet a flight examiner for a flight evaluation ride. He looked to the left to ensure that he would be clear of another aircraft and the right wing hit a chain linked fence….

August 11, Rohrersville, Md. / Piper Turbo Arrow

At about 19:20 eastern time, a Piper PA-28RT-201 struck a ridge while in cruise flight, killing the pilot and two passengers. Witnesses said the airplane was flying in and out of the clouds in drizzly weather with low ceilings. The ridge was obscured by fog and mist. The pilot apparently attempted to pull up to get over the ridge, but crashed about 400 feet lower than the 1,800 feet msl peak. The pilot did not hold an instrument rating but reported 2,000 hours on his last medical certificate application….
