October 25, Los Angeles, Calif. / Piper Arrow

At 0347 Pacific time, a Piper PA-28R-200 was damaged after it collided with a power line while attempting to land at Whiteman Airport in Pacoima, Los Angeles County. The pilot was seriously injured. The flight had departed the same airport approximately 17 minutes earlier. The airport lights were illuminated at that time. The pilot noted that the lights were still on while he was about 10 miles out on his return flight, but by the time he reached the airport only the taxiway lights were illuminated. At about 1930 eastern time, a Piper PA-28R-201T was lost from radar and radio contact and crashed in the Gulf of Mexico near Cedar Key. The two occupants were presumed killed. The pilot was receiving VFR flight following at 12,500 feet from Key West to Tallahassee when The controller advised the pilot of weather located at his 10 oclock position and 40 miles. At 0950 eastern time, a Piper PA-28R-200 struck trees and crashed while maneuvering near Laurel Bloomery. The pilot received minor injuries. The pilot said he was practicing maneuvers in the local area when he encountered clear ice at 6,500 feet msl. He descended to 3,500 feet in an attempt to get below the icing conditions but was still picking up ice. At about 17:50 EDT, a deplaning passenger in a Piper Arrow struck the propeller and was killed at Wimauma Airport. The pilot and two other passengers were not injured. After landing in the rain on a flight from the Bahamas, the pilot taxied the airplane to the terminal area so the passengers could deplane. At 1500 central time, a Piper PA-28RT-201 struck power lines after takeoff from Lebanon Municipal Airport. The flight instructor and pilot-rated student were killed and a pilot-rated passenger suffered minor injuries. Oct. 8, Berlin, Md. / Piper Arrow

At 16:23 EDT, a Piper PA-28R-200 made a forced landing following a loss of engine power near Berlin, seriously injuring the pilot and passenger. An annual inspection had been completed the day before the accident, but an instrument training flight after the release from maintenance had turned up no anomalies. On the day of the accident, the pilot took off but the gear did not retract. He returned to land, and a mechanic adjusted the landing gear.
