At about 1020 Mountain time, the Columbia 300 veered off Runway 24 during the landing roll. There were no injuries, but the airplane sustained substantial damage. According to a witness in a Cessna 150, a dust devil was in the area; it had lifted his airplane approximately 10 feet during a landing attempt. He recovered, then completed his landing. At 0950 Pacific time, a Lancair LC42-550FG operated by Lancair as a business flight, veered off the runway during the landing roll at Roberts Field and collided with a taxi sign. The pilot, flight instructor and two passengers were not injured. The flight departed from Bend, Oregon, about 10 minutes prior to the accident. The pilot said he flared about four feet above the runway and the stall warning horn sounded. He chopped the power and the aircraft rapidly descended to the runway. At about 1040 eastern time, an amateur-built Lancair IVP was damaged during takeoff from Manassas Regional Airport. The pilot and passenger were not injured. The pilot said he received an IFR clearance with complex changes to his planned route. He then felt rushed and distracted during the pre-takeoff checklist and forgot to extend the flaps to the takeoff position. During the takeoff roll, the airplane became airborne, but then settled back on the runway, went off the right side, struck a runway sign and came to rest in a grass area….

At approximately 1045 Pacific time, a Lancair LC41, prototype for the Lancair 400, crashed about 15 miles east of Bend during spin testing. The pilot bailed out and was not injured. The pilot had been conducting a series of spin entry and recovery tests, and had intentionally entered a fully developed spin. During the final spin, the flight controls were insufficient to recover, so he deployed the spin recovery/stabilization drogue parachute. After he recovered from the spin, he was unable to jettison the drogue chute with either the manual or backup system. At about 1045 Pacific time, an amateur-built Lancair IV-P was damaged during takeoff from North Las Vegas Airport. The pilot suffered minor injuries and two passengers were not injured. The pilot said the airplane settled back on the runway after rotation. He continued the takeoff and the airplane again became airborne, then drifted to the right side of the runway and settled again, causing the landing gear to collapse. The pilot said he had been advised by air traffic control prior to departure of possible wake turbulence. He thought he had waited about one minute before starting the takeoff….

At 1758 eastern time, an amateur-built Lancair IV broke up in-flight in the vicinity of Allendale, killing all four occupants. Air traffic control data showed the flight was cruising at 17,000 feet when the pilot asked to deviate for weather. The controller offered the pilot a choice of deviating left or right, and provided headings. The pilot opted to go to the right. About 10 minutes later the flight was cleared to descend to 13,000 feet, then 11,000 feet in preparation for a landing in Buford. At 1510 mountain time, the pilot of an amateur-built Lancair 235 lost control during an aborted landing on runway 24 at Payson Airport. The pilot was killed. A witness said the pilot had bought the airplane two days earlier and was planning to conduct fast taxi tests. On the second test, the airplane became airborne and the pilot departed the airport. Other witnesses said they saw the accident airplane make two approaches that culminated in go-arounds, and on each approach the airplane displayed pitch deviations. On the third approach, the airplane landed hard about 1,500 feet down the runway. It bounced into the air, landed back on the runway, and the engine powered up to abort the landing….

At approximately 0905 Pacific time, a Lancair IV crashed during an aborted landing at a private airstrip four miles east-southeast of Coeur dAlene. The pilot and one passenger were killed and another passenger was seriously injured. The survivor was a pilot who had flown into and out of the landing site on previous occasions, but the pilot had never flown into the 40-foot-wide, 2,206-foot-long airstrip before. The owner of the airstrip said the aircraft entered a left traffic pattern and, on short final, appeared to be high and with a nose-high attitude. At approximately 18:12 PST, a Pacific Aviation Composites LC 40-550FG, the Lancair Columbia prototype, crashed into the Columbia River about one mile west of Portland International Airport while on approach to runway 10L. Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and no flight plan was filed. The two people aboard were killed. The flight originated from Bend, Ore., about one hour before the accident. The pilot contacted Portland Approach and reported that he was 25 miles east of Portland International and requested IFR clearance for landing at PDX. At about 13:00 EDT, a homebuilt Lancair 235 was damaged during a loss of control during landing at Hamilton-Fairfield Airport. The pilot suffered minor injuries. An investigator determined that the pilot made an approach to runway 29, but performed a go-around prior to touchdown. During a second landing attempt, the airplane touched down, then veered to the left and struck a runway light. The pilot added full power to go around again. The airplane then pitched nose-up and rolled left. The propeller struck the ground, and the airplane cartwheeled.
