February 13, 2011, Dawsonville, Ga., Lancair 320 Experimental

The airplane was substantially damaged at about 1100 Eastern time after a loss of engine power and forced landing. The commercial pilot and the private pilot-rated passenger were not injured. Visual conditions prevailed. Subsequently, the pilot/owner gave a comprehensive account of the preflight planning, preflight inspection, takeoff and flight to an area north of his departure airport with no anomalies noted. Once established in an area clear of traffic, the pilot allowed his passenger to do some maneuvering and become accustomed to the airplane, as it was his first flight in a Lancair.

Emergency Landing on Beach Has Tragic Outcome

September 5, 2009, Louisa, Va., Lancair 235/Cessna 140

At about 1230 Eastern time, the airplane was substantially damaged when it was struck by a taxiing Cessna 140. The private pilot in the Lancair and the private pilot in the Cessna were not injured. Visual conditions prevailed. The Cessnas pilot reported taxiing to Runway 27, and following the Lancair in front of her at “a safe distance” while conducting “proper turns.” As she taxied up to the runway hold-short line, she lost sight of the Lancair, and then felt her airplanes propeller “strike something.”

July 18, 2009, Santa Clarita, Calif., Lancair Experimental

The airplane impacted terrain at about 1210 Pacific time while maneuvering and was destroyed. The pilot and one passenger were killed. Visual conditions prevailed. According to a witness, he saw the accident airplane at about 2000 feet, and reported hearing “throttle adjustments,” the sound of an “engine surging.” The airplane performed an “aerobatic maneuver,” which he described as a “flip,” followed by a loop, and then the airplane stalled.

September 2, 2008, Camarillo, Calif., Lancair Propjet Experimental

At about 1645 Pacific time, the airplane was substantially damaged during a forced landing, following a loss of engine power during the initial climb. The commercial pilot and his passenger sustained minor injuries. Visual conditions prevailed. The pilot reported the engine lost power during initial climb. The pilot initiated a forced landing and performed a 180-degree turn back to the runway.
