The detachment is the first active-duty flight training unit based at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, since the end of World War II.

The milestone puts the helicopter on track for delivery to the U.S. Air Force in 2024, the aircraft manufacturing giant said.

Under the deal, Bell Textron Canada will provide services to extend the life of the Royal Canadian Air Force’s fleet of helicopters.

The mishap occurred during a routine training mission, service officials said.

The firefighting-capable aircraft boasts the capacity to transport up to a dozen crewmembers, as well as carry more than 750 gallons of water.

The order marks the largest placed for the light attack helicopter, Airbus said.

About 90 percent of the service’s Jayhawk helicopter fleet is expected to reach its 20,000-hour maximum operational life limit by fiscal 2028.
