August 21, Davidsville, Pa. / Cessna Cardinal

At about 15:50 eastern time, a Cessna 177 struck trees while taking off from a field in Davidsville. The pilot received minor injuries. The airplane had suffered a loss of engine power and made a forced landing in the field several days earlier. Fuel was off-loaded to make the airplane lighter and the pilot was issued a ferry permit to depart the field. The grass was reported as six to 12 inches tall. The pilot was able to get the airplane airborne in 1,150 feet, but then struck a low dirt embankment, went through a fence and struck trees near a house. May 03, Washington, Okla. / Cessna Cutlass

At 13:15 central time, a Cessna 172RG was damaged during a precautionary landing near Washington after the pilots encountered smoke in the cockpit. The pilot and the CFI suffered minor injuries. The pilots were practicing commercial flight maneuvers when they smelled an electrical fire. They immediately began to return to the airport, but two minutes later the cockpit filled with smoke. The pilots secured all electrical equipment and landed in a field, where the airplane nosed over. An investigation showed chafing of electrical wires between the engine firewall and cockpit instrument panel. A plastic hydraulic reservoir was found melted and laying on the cockpit floor….

April 13, Gig Harbor, Wash. / Cessna Cutlass

At about 19:46 Pacific time, a Cessna 172RG was damaged while landing at Tacoma Narrows Airport. The pilot was not injured. The pilot said the airplane suffered an electrical failure after taking off from runway 17. He completed a 180-degree turn to land on the opposing runway and, just before touchdown, thought he heard the prop strike the runway. He applied power for a go-around, then aborted the go-around and put the gear down to land. When the airplane touched down, the right main landing gear collapsed….

September 05, Carbonado, Wash. / Cessna Cutlass

At approximately 15:30 Pacific time, a Cessna 172RG on an aerial fire survey flight crashed into high terrain while maneuvering about 5 nm east of Carbonado. The pilot and passenger suffered minor injuries. The pilot, also a flight instructor, said he departed Boeing Field with the passenger for a fire spotting flight in the Cascade Mountain foothills. He demonstrated some flight maneuvers to the passenger, then allowed the passenger to fly. The pilot sensed a loss of climb performance and took the flight controls, but the engine began running rough and the airplane struck trees. At 1330 central time, a Cessna 177 flew into the ground near Pond Creek, leaving the pilot with serious injuries. The flight was a pipeline patrol, cruising at about 300 agl. The pilot said he dozed off and woke up when the airplane struck the ground….
