At 0958 Pacific time, the airplane lost engine power during flight and was landed on a road. The airplane sustained substantial damage. The private pilot and three passengers were not injured. Visual conditions prevailed. According to the pilot, during the flight he heard a change in engine power. He switched the fuel tanks and monitored the fuel flow. The fuel flow continued to decrease until the engine lost power.

At 1112 Central time, the airplane was substantially damaged when it impacted an open field under unknown circumstances. A post-impact fire ensued. The non-instrument-rated private pilot and two passengers were fatally injured. Instrument conditions prevailed.Several witnesses reported hearing an airplane flying low and hearing a loud snap or pop consistent with a gunshot. One witness heard a second explosion as the airplane struck the ground.

The pilot noticed no anomalies prior to the loss of engine power.

A preliminary review of radar data revealed a VFR target proceeding north-northwest before making a left turn toward the west and continuing on a westerly heading toward rising terrain before radar data ended at approximately 1100.

The private pilot and private-certificated passenger sustained serious injuries. The airplane sustained substantial damage. Visual conditions prevailed. While maneuvering to land, the pilot reported problems with the airplanes landing gear. He performed a low approach, during which tower personnel reported the gear appeared to be down.
