Multiple reports detail various spark plug failures, including internal resistor breakdown, insulator failure, electrode loss, and plugs detaching from the engine.
These failures resulted in a range of engine malfunctions, such as misfires, high EGT readings, severe preignition leading to cylinder damage, and recurring magneto failures.
The incidents underscore the critical impact of spark plug integrity on engine performance and safety, often leading to power loss, rough operation, and significant component damage.
The pilot noticed a high EGT reading. A magneto check revealed one of the eight spark plugs was not firing. Examination revealed resistance in five of the eight plugs exceeded the 2 MΩ limit. The internal resistors had failed and the current path was open. The resistors should have been about 1.5 kΩ.
