Sun ‘n Fun Closes Strong

Sun ‘n Fun closed in style over the weekend with a reported 5 percent uptick in traffic compared to last year’s show, according to organizers. Reports from companies attending the show varied. While all reported a drop-off in overall foot traffic, a number of them told Flying that the quality of the folks who stopped […]

Fixing The Notam Mess

As more and more technology is welcomed into our formerly round-dial cockpits, many pilots have expressed growing frustration over the lingering need to do some things the old-fashioned way. In the new, high-tech cockpit, flat-panel screens, all-electronic flight instruments and portable, tablet-size computers with built-in GPS dominate our must-have lists. Along the way, these much-welcomed advances have helped simplify the pre-flight planning task. But much of the information we need for every flight remains stuck in the abbreviated, ALL CAPS format used when DC-3s and J3 Cubs were the cat’s meow. Bye Bye, Oshkosh

My trip home from Oshkosh last week offered an enlightening contrast between “old” and “new” aviation technologies, and a lesson in how best to integrate the two in the same cockpit. While my colleagues at Flying scored rides home in Citation and Falcon bizjets that I’m sure were outfitted with some fairly sophisticated gear, I […]
