At 10:30 central time, a Cessna 172 was damaged shortly after engine start when it started unexpectedly and struck trees. The pilot was not injured and the passenger suffered minor injuries. The pilot said he could not start the airplane, so he exited while the passenger stayed in the airplane. August 26, Matawan, N.J. / Cessna Skyhawk

At about 20:30 eastern time, a Cessna 172SP struck wires and crashed after a touch-and-go at Marlboro Airport, killing the pilot and passenger. Witnesses said the airplane had been flying locally for about 15 minutes when it returned and appeared to approach runway 9 for landing. The airplane did not touchdown until it was well beyond the approach end of runway 9, almost to the number 27 at the opposite end of the 2,156-foot runway. After touchdown, the engine revved and the airplane climbed, but it veered left and struck utility wires and crashed. At about 15:40 Pacific time, a Cessna 152 and a Cessna 172N collided over the Pacific Ocean about six miles south of the Long Beach Municipal Airport. Both airplanes were being operated by the same flight school and both contained a student pilot and flight instructor. All four were killed. Witnesses said that, following the collision, both airplanes entered uncontrolled descents into the water….

At 17:22 central time, a Cessna 172N struck trees during an emergency landing at Georgetown Municipal Airport. The pilot and his two passengers received minor injuries. The flight departed Hutchinson, Kan., at 12:50, with a planned destination of Austin, Texas. The pilot said he had flown from Austin to Hutchinson a few days earlier without refueling and planned to make the return trip without a fuel stop. The fuel gauges read empty as the flight passed Georgetown, but the pilot did not believe the gauges and continued the flight. At 17:20 eastern time, a Cessna 172 went off the runway while landing at Pennridge Airport. The pilot was not injured. The pilot said the setting sun hindered visibility out the windshield as he approached runway 26. As he flared, the sun was directly in his face and the glared turned the airplanes crazed windshield milky white and made forward visibility impossible. At about 08:55 eastern time, a Cessna 172P struck concrete columns at McGhee Tyson Airport. Neither occupant was injured. The pilot said he started the engine and realized a chock was still in place on the right main wheel. He set the parking brake and left the cockpit to remove the chock. October 20, Kissimmee, Fla. / North American Texan and Cessna Skyhawk

At 12:50 eastern time, a North American SNJ-6 collided on the ground with a Cessna 172R after landing at Kissimmee Municipal Airport. The Cessna landed on runway 6 and cleared the runway at taxiway Delta. The ground controller advised the Cessna pilot to hold there momentarily. Meanwhile, the Texan landed on runway 6 and was advised by the controller to follow the Cessna. The pilot of the Texan reported that the Cessna was in sight and turned off the runway onto taxiway Delta. The pilot of the Texan then lost sight of the Cessna, and the Texans propeller subsequently collided with the tail of the Cessna. The Texan sustained minor damage, and the Cessnas empennage was destroyed….

At about 14:10 eastern time, a Cessna 172D crashed while returning to land at Argyle Airport. The pilot was not injured. The pilot said the oil access door popped open shortly after takeoff when he was at about 150 feet agl. He decided to return for a landing and made a left turn toward the airport. He said the airplane then lost lift because of strong wind and the airplane struck the ground about -mile from the approach end of runway 21. Wind at an airport eight miles away was reported as 190 degrees at 14 knots, gusting to 18 knots….
