Theres an old, tasteless joke from the mid-1990s, back when some Boeing 737s were having a problem with uncommanded rudder movement eventually traced to the hydraulic systems power control unit. The rudder hardovers were probable causes in two fatal U.S. accidents, and were suspected in other incidents worldwide.
Airlines For America (A4A) petitioned the FAA for a five-year exemption from the January 1, 2020, ADS-B Out mandate for some aircraft, requesting to operate with less accurate, older GPS technology beyond the deadline.
Despite the FAA Administrator publicly stating the 2020 deadline would not be extended, the agency later indicated it is reviewing A4A's petition and is likely to approve it.
The potential exemption is criticized for undermining the FAA's credibility, the anticipated airspace efficiencies from ADS-B, and for creating a perceived double standard compared to general aviation.
