Key Takeaways:

  • President Trump reportedly offered to release over $16 billion for the critical New York-New Jersey Gateway infrastructure project if Washington Dulles International Airport and Penn Station were named after him.
  • Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer rejected the proposal, stating he did not have the power to rename the sites, a change that would likely require an act of Congress.
  • The funding freeze for the Gateway project has led to a lawsuit from New York and New Jersey, while the Trump administration has separately initiated efforts to reconstruct and modernize Dulles Airport, which it has criticized.

President Donald Trump is reportedly considering unfreezing billions of dollars for a critical New York infrastructure project, on two conditions—both Washington Dulles International Airport (KIAD) and Penn Station must be named after him.

This was the deal offered by the White House to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer last month, according to a report from Punchbowl News. Schumer turned down the offer and told Trump he doesn’t have the power to rename the two sites, sources with knowledge of the matter told the news website.
