A passenger successfully made a hard landing in a Cessna 150 at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport (KGVL) after the pilot became incapacitated.
The pilot later died, though it is unclear if his death resulted from the hard landing, a medical emergency, or both.
Guided by others on the radio, the passenger maneuvered at dangerously low speeds and altitude before the landing, which resulted in a broken nosewheel and smoke but no fire.
The passenger was reportedly uninjured, and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has examined the wreckage.
