The article provides a refresher on three critical airport ground markings: the Non-Movement Area Boundary, ILS Hold Position, and Runway Hold Position markings, which are frequently misunderstood by pilots.
These markings are crucial for defining areas of Air Traffic Control (ATC) authority, protecting Instrument Landing System (ILS) signals from interference, and most importantly, preventing dangerous runway incursions.
Pilots must understand and strictly adhere to the rules associated with each line, requesting permission to cross controlled areas and utilizing resources like Advisory Circular 150/5340-1M and taxi diagrams to ensure ground safety and operational efficiency.
Despite normal/recurrent training and obvious statements in the AIM and advisory circulars, I’ve had a lot of pilots recently be very confused on where the line starts. What line? While there are many lines in aviation, the top three I’m concerned about are on the ground at most tower-controlled fields. Time for a refresher.
