Air traffic controllers and pilots sometimes engage in humorous misunderstandings, such as mistaking a float plane for an emergency landing or offering compliments for simply following basic landing instructions.
Controllers occasionally show their human side, from asking pilots for assistance in settling trainee arguments to recognizing a pilot's voice but misreading their own handwriting.
Pilots can receive surprisingly helpful and personal advice from ATC, including warnings about high landing fees and suggestions for alternative airports to save money.
I was talking to New York Approach when I heard the following:
GrayRider 5 (NY State Police): “Albany Approach, GrayRider 5. Change of mission. That plane in the water, well it’s confirmed as a float plane, so it’s now direct to Deer Park for GrayRider 5.”
