Although the official NTSB statistics aren’t yet available, there’s enough available evidence to say certain civil aviation segments are wrapping up a pretty good year. Others, not so much.
Commercial aviation experienced one of its safest years ever in 2011, setting a global record for the longest period without a fatal airliner accident.
Conversely, non-commercial and business aviation safety declined in 2011, with an increase in accidents for U.S. fixed-wing business aircraft operators.
Overall U.S. aviation fatalities decreased from 2009 to 2010, though general aviation remained the primary contributor to these numbers.
While 2011's overall U.S. civil aviation safety record is projected to be only slightly better than 2010, the poor performance of non-commercial business aircraft raises concerns.
