Officials at Middle Tennessee State University and the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments, and Aviation have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) designed to create educational and career opportunities for the country’s students and aviation professionals.
The agreement was signed on May 30 by Chester Cooper, the Bahamian deputy prime minister and minister of the department of tourism, investments, and aviation, and Sidney McPhee, MTSU president.
The partnership enables Bahamas students to enroll in MTSU’s aerospace training programs, as well as participate in summer immersion experiences on campus in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and access fast-track options designed for working professionals. In addition they will have access to online courses designed specifically for Bahamian students and professionals.
“This partnership is a monumental step in developing our aviation industry and education landscape,” Cooper said in a press release. “By equipping our emerging and existing aviation professionals with world-class skills and international experience, we are building a foundation for sustainable growth and competitiveness that positions the Bahamas as a global leader in aviation.”
McPhee also expressed excitement over the partnership.
“I am honored…to welcome our friends from the Commonwealth of the Bahamas for the signing of this significant agreement,” McPhee said. “MTSU has been the choice of many students from the Bahamas seeking higher education opportunities. The ties between the commonwealth and our university are strong and constant, and, indeed, students from this nation represent a significant percentage of our international enrollment.”
MTSU’s Department of Aerospace is one of the largest in the United States. Students have access to training opportunities that will enable them to work in a variety of aviation fields, including professional pilot, aerospace, management, technology, flight dispatch, and unmanned aerial systems (UAVs/drones).
The college also boasts partnerships with Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines to help students find jobs.
