ATC Zero, a complete facility shutdown, is categorized into four levels of severity based on the cause and expected recovery time, from quick manual fixes to irreparable damage.
During an ATC Zero event, neighboring ATC facilities collaboratively absorb and manage the affected airspace, requiring extensive inter-facility coordination, adjustments in altitudes and frequencies, and sometimes extended operations to ensure continuous and safe air traffic services.
The successful handling of a center's COVID-19 shutdown by adjacent TRACONs demonstrated the effectiveness of these contingency plans and the crucial role of teamwork in maintaining operations.
