FAA Proposes Criteria for Embraer E195-E2 Automated Takeoff System

Proposed special conditions cover allowable runway departure distances accounting for possible variations in rotation speed.

Key Takeaways:

  • The FAA has proposed special certification conditions for Embraer's novel Enhanced Takeoff System (E2TS) on its E195-E2 regional jet, which is designed to automate takeoff rotation and initial climb.
  • These special conditions are necessary because the E2TS, as the first automated takeoff system for commercial passenger jets controlling pitch and bank without pilot input, is a "novel or unusual design feature" for which current manual-flying airworthiness standards are inadequate.
  • The proposed criteria require the E2TS to ensure takeoff distances, even with expected deviations in rotation speed or out-of-trim conditions, do not exceed published aircraft flight manual limits and do not result in unsafe flight characteristics.

The FAA has proposed criteria for certifying a novel automated takeoff system on Embraer’s narrowbody E195-E2.

The Brazilian manufacturer in 2021 applied for a type certification modification to add the Embraer Enhanced Takeoff System (E2TS), which it bills as the first automated setup for commercial passenger jets, to the E195-E2. The regional twinjet is the largest member of Embraer’s second-generation E2 family, designed to seat up to 146 passengers. It obtained triple FAA, European Union, and Brazilian type certification in 2019.
