For the first time in AirVenture history, a drone light show will be included as one of the events.
According to EAA, the show will consist of 100 lighted drones performing a 10-minute show called “The History of Flight,” which also includes a musical accompaniment. The drone performance will be a part of Oshkosh’s night air shows on July 25 and 28.
Dave Chaimson, EAA’s vice president of marketing and business development, described the larger significance of the show. “What makes this event especially memorable are the intricate maneuvers that are capable by up to 100 synchronized drones, highlighting the possibilities of safe and responsible drone flying. People come to AirVenture to see aerial excitement not seen anywhere else, and these performances certainly continue that tradition,” he said.
The show will be flown by Michigan’s Great Lakes Drone Company, one of only two companies authorized by the FAA to organize this type of mass-flight, according to EAA. Great Lakes Drone Company has put on performances before, but this will be the first time that the company will be performing at an air show.
Matt Quinn, president of the Great Lakes Drone Company, told EAA that Oshkosh is the ideal place to display the performance due to the fact that the air show is known as an event where innovation and excitement is prevalent.
“That’s why we are so excited about this opportunity to be part of the famed night air shows and perform in front of the tens of thousands of aviation enthusiasts on the flightline — a real first for the air show community,” he said.
