Key Takeaways:

  • Virgin Galactic extended the deadline for the public to vote on a name for its second next-generation "Delta-class" spaceplane, with four options including "Apeiron."
  • Commercial service for the new Delta-class spaceplanes, designed for a much higher flight cadence, has been delayed to February 2027, with the second vehicle joining around March 2027.
  • The company plans to significantly increase flight frequency to over 10 missions per month by mid-2027 and will raise ticket prices from $750,000 this fall.
  • With competitor Blue Origin pausing commercial flights, Virgin Galactic could be the only company flying customers to the edge of space by 2027.

Virgin Galactic on Friday extended the deadline for the public to name one of its next-generation spaceplanes, giving space enthusiasts until Thursday to cast their votes.

Virgin Galactic, which offers suborbital expeditions for paying customers, launched its first commercial mission in June 2023 and has not flown one since ’24, when it retired its earlier SpaceShipTwo-class spaceplane, VSS Unity. The company is now building two “Delta-class” vehicles and will allow the public to put its stamp on one of them.
