SocialFlight has expanded its database of features beyond just aviation events. Through the free mobile app and web-based service you can now get access to more information and also connect with aviation friends and businesses.

Adding to the database of more than 15,000 aviation events, such as fly-ins, airshows, conventions, seminars and more, new features include airport information and weather, including real time NEXRAD, METARs and TAFs. There is also access to more than 100,000 restaurants, lodging, attractions and other points of interest. By tapping on an event or airport, a screen will pop up to show you any such points of interest within walking distance. Clicking on the point of interest will link to the source for more information, made available through SocialFlight’s partnership with Yelp, Open Source and others.

And speaking of partnerships, the service continues to be free thanks to SocialFlight’s partnership with companies such as Jeppesen, Champion Aerospace, Avidyne, Sennheiser and more.

You can also connect with pilots in your area through the “my hangar” section, where you can enter specific search parameters. For example, Jeff Simon, SocialFlight’s president, said that one member found an Aeronca-specific flight instructor in the area through this search feature.

There are several video tutorials on how to use SocialFlight for your benefit, whether you’re trying to find an aviation event, a flight instructor or a likeminded pilot nearby, or a point of interest or restaurant in the area you are visiting.
